Despite a general lack of spandex—save for the occasion rendition of The Day Man Cometh—appearances by the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at the last couple of San Diego Comic-Cons have proven major hits, inspiring the sort of fan-based pandemonium generally reserved for Joss Whedon and emo vampires.

I jumped at the opportunity to speak with the cast of the FX series about which I often bandy about the coveted title of “funniest show on television” in casual conversation (or, at the very least running a neck and neck raise with The Mighty Boosh and 30 Rock, both former Rock Hatchers).

I spoke with co-stars and co-creators Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton (Mac and Dennis on the show) about a number of things, and naturally had to slip a couple of comics-related questions into the mix. That portion of my conversation with Howerton can be found after the jump.

Spoiler: He says “Spider-Man”—a lot.

[More It’s Always Sunny Comic-Con interviews here.]

Are you having a good time at Comic-Con, thus far?

I’m having a great time. I love coming down to Comic-Con. It’s a lot of fun.

Are you a comic book fan at all?

I was. I used to read The Amazing Spider-Man. And The Life and Times of Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker…

Yeah, Peter Parker, M.D.—all the variations of Spider-Man.

So, basically lots of Spider-Man books, then.

Yeah, I was always a big fan…Spider-Man was the one I read the most. I had a lot of them. I had a couple of Hulk. I was into The Hulk, you know, back the TV show days. In the Lou Ferrigno hey-day, if you will. Not the Lou Ferrigno training Michael Jackson days, but the Lou Ferrigno as The Hulk days.

Or the Pumping Iron days.

Or the Pumping Iron days, which were amazing. Those were some of the best days. Not for him, but for Schwarzenegger, that was the hey-day. Lou Ferrigno does not come off well in Pumping Iron. But he’s loveable. If you watch Pumping Iron, you love Lou Ferrigno.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman share what is arguably the greatest geek job on the planet. Sure it’s a bit of an overstatement to suggest that they blow up stuff for a living—but just a bit. The duo’s expertise in the art of special effects landed them a gig on basic cable wherein they deconstruct popular myths in the most exciting—and fun—manner possible.

Suffice to say, the show, which exists at a crossroads between an appreciation of science and a general love of explosions, has taken off in a huge way amongst the geek set, a fact the Discovery Channel happily capitalized upon with a huge promotional push at this year’s Comic Con. It was hard to work more than a few feet on the showroom floor without spotting a slew of giant Mythbusters swag bags.

During the show, we had the opportunity to chat up the duo in Savage’s hotel suite, to get their impressions of this whole comic book thing.

Being that it’s Comic-Con, I have to ask, are either of you comics fans, at all?

Adam Savage: Absolutely. I’m a huge fan of Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore. The Gods.

The three pillars.

AS: And Mike Mignola, who I just met. Absolutely one of my heroes. I didn’t grow up being a comic book collector. I was very specifically introduced to Frank Miller when I was 17 or 18—the Elektra: Assassin series. I own the original releases of everything Frank Miller has ever done. He’s a genius.

Are you spending any time on the floor, looking at all the books?

AS: I have spent a couple of hours this morning, and will spend some more tomorrow.

Is there anything you saw that you’re looking forward to? Anything you’re definitely going to buy?

AS: I did pass a booth with some original prints by Bill Sienkiewicz. I’m thinking about going back and buying one. He’s a bloody genius.

Jamie Hyneman: I’ve probably read more science-fiction that anyone I know. Comic books, not so much. But the mindset, there’s obviously a lot of crossover, so I look at it as, one way or another, a lot of fun. It’s clearly a very vibrant collection of something that all of the marketing people and movie makers and advertisers, and everybody is trying to figure out. People are watching this, and we’re pleased to somehow, in spite of what we do for a living, we’ve ended up in the middle of the zeitgeist.

Are you looking forward to getting on the floor?

JH: Oh yeah. I went last year, and I can’t wear the hat.

Or you’ll be recognized?

JH: Yeah, I won’t be able to go from point A to point B.

“It’s like Beatlemania,” answers Noel Fielding, smiling. “I don’t really understand. They screamed for like five minutes. We were just stand there, going, ‘what should we do?’ “ It’s The Mighty Boosh’s second day of their first-ever US tour, and the welcome thus far has been warm–and then some.

Last night, Fielding and cohort Julian Baratt played to a packed Bowery Ballroom. What had been billed as a “secret show” had ended up anything but, with a line of eager and sporadically costumed fans stretching literally around the block. Today is a non-stop gaunlet of interviews for the duo, who at the moment look as if they gotten a single hour of sleep between them.

There are scheduling conflicts and late arrivals and a Jimmy Fallon appearance that’s less than an hour away—a downright whirlwind for stars of the BBC by way of the Cartoon Network series. For me that means roughly three minutes of interview time to record a bit for my podcast, PCMag After Hours. But it gets done, and, in spite of everything, Fielding still pulses with the charm that defines his onscreen counterpart, Vince Noir.

We discuss Comic Con, Dan Clowes, and Barratt’s downright astounding cooking skills. Check out a transcript–and video–of the interview, after the jump.

You’re ostensibly out here for Comic Con?

Noooo. No [laughs].

But you are going to Comic Con?

Yeah, we are.

Have you been to any comic conventions? Are you a comic book guy at all?

[Shakes head] It’s for geeks, isn’t it?

It is for geeks.

No, I do like comics a lot, actually. I like Daniel Clowes who did—

Ghost World.
Yeah, I like all of that stuff. I like Eightball. I like Tank Girl. I do like comics a lot.

But the sci-fi stuff isn’t your scene at all?

No. I’ve got some friends who are into it. But I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be fun. And [in New York] we did a show at the Bowery [Ballroom] and we did a lot of press over here, lots of interviews and we’re doing Jimmy Fallon. We’re doing lots of chat shows. We’re sort of just caging—doing lots of interviews meeting lots of interesting people—just seeing how it’s going down. The show’s been on telly here and the DVD’s coming out. It’s like dipping our toes in the water.

It’s been going well so far? The show was packed last night.

Really well! It’s like Beatlemania. I don’t really understand. They screamed for like five minutes. We were just stand there, going, ‘what should we do?’ It was very English. We were just standing there going [exhales] “okaaay…if you would just…carry on screaming.” It’s a bit embarrassing and awkward. “If you could stop doing that…”

There were a lot of Scottish and British people screaming. People were screaming, “London!”

How dare you? It all Americans. There was only one yappy Scotsperson there. “Ahhh, we’re from Scotland!” I don’t know why people say that at comedy gigs. They always want to tell you where they’re from and you just think, ‘that’s of no interest to me.’

I suppose they thing that if they’re somewhat geographically close to where you’re from, you might have some kind of a kinship.

Yeah, I might go, “great! Come on, let’s get out of here.” Also, Scotland…who cares about Scotland?

So what are you guys going to be doing at Comic Con?

Ummmm…I don’t know [laughs]. A question and answer panel thing and we’re going to do a cabaret-type DJ set at night somewhere. Julian’s going to be cooking for everyone.

For everyone at the con?

Yeah.

That’s like 126,000 people.

That’s fine. He’s good. He’ll just rustle something up. I’m going to be wearing a hat with a sort of, monkey skulls attached to it.

Do you feel like when you go out now that you’ve got to stay in character? Or are the characters pretty much you?

No, I’m just a bit hungover [laughs].

You’re in character for the shows, though.

I went out to a club in a dress. But yeah, that isn’t really a character.

These guys are you two, pretty much?

Yeah, it’s like 5-percent character and the rest is pretty much us.

The spikey-haired happy mutant launched Boing Boing more than 21 years ago. The directory of wonderful things was born in 1988 as a print ‘zine boasting the tagline, “The World’s Greatest Neurozine,” tackling topics ranging from cyberpunk to intellectual property rights.

In 2000, Boing Boing was reborn as a blog, eventually growing into one of the most heavily-trafficked pop-culture resources on the Web. In that time, Frauenfelder has worked as an editor for Wired; an online columnist for Playboy; and has authored, edited, and/or illustrated a diverse range of books. Oh, and he’s also the editor-in-chief of the Santa Rosa-based quarterly DIY magazine, Make.

With a resume like that (and a wife and kids to boot), one suspects that the writer doesn’t have all that much free time for the important things in life, like, say, comics. But he somehow manages to squeeze sequential art into his to-do list, a fact often reflected by his Boing Boing posts.

It took everything within my power not to stick the name Pete Hornberger at the top of this post, but heck, as much as we all love 30 Rock (and we all do, right?), embracing Scott Adsit’s unhappily married, TV show producing alter-ego would come at the expense of the actor’s other contributions to the comedy world, including a stint at Chicago’s world famous Second City, spots on Mr. Show, and a writing/producing/directing/starring role on the brilliant, if short-lived, Adult Swim Davey and Goliath spoof, Moral Orel.

Oh, and perhaps most impressive of all, as stated in the interview below, the comedian once shared a room with Flavor Flav.

When he’s not making comedy or laughing at ex-Public Enemy members, Adsit is a big comics fan, as evidenced by appearances at a number of comic conventions (including the most recently NYCC) and on the guest list of our favorite live comics comedy talk show, Comic Book Club.

30 Rock returns to NBC on October 15th. In the meantime, Adsit will be appearing in front of the graphic novel shelves at Manhattan’s Forbidden Planet.

Who are you?

I’m an actor who sometimes writes. I’m currently on a show called 30 Rock and, until its untimely yanking, a different show called Moral Orel, which I also co-wrote, directed and produced. I also did some storyboarding on it. I liked it a lot. Some shut-ins might know me from the Tenacious D short about “The Greatest Song in the World,” while others will recognize me as a jubilant audience member at the Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav.

As I write this, I’m working with Dino Stamatopoulos, developing a new stop-motion Adult Swim show currently called Frankenhole, a title no one likes.

Faction, Brubaker, Johns, Duggin, Noto, Brooks, Dini, Vaughan and I’ll follow the FF wherever they go. I also love reading Jess Nevins’s books annotating Alan Moore’s books. And Hader, Meyers & Maguire just did a great Spider-Man book.

Your favorite comic shop?

In NYC it’s Forbidden Planet, which recently revamped their floorplan, the result of which is like buiding a railroad hub on an airport runway.

The Ten Doctors by Rich Morris.

Assorted Scott Adsit-related comic fun facts:

I first met America’s Radio Sweetheart back in the early aughts. We were in an improv troupe together, along with a dozen or so Santa Cruz students with a wide variety of hygiene habits. Back then he was just a funny guy from San Francisco, though, if I remember correctly, he’d already seen fit to adopt his modest nickname.

In those early years, I watched his talk show The Sound of Young America evolve, co-opted his co-host Jordan Morris for my own radio show (now the co-host of Jordan, Jesse, Go), and generally flexed my authority in as much as the manager for a scrappy college radio station has any authority to flex. Which is to say, none at all.

Even back then it was clear that TSOYA possessed something other shows didn’t—namely Jesse Thorn, a smooth talking an engaging personality with the sort of polish generally lacking from the crap shoot that is college radio, god bless it. Thorn always knew the right people to interview, and he always knew just how to interview them.

Filling in for him one Thursday, Morris and I interviewed David Cross, crashing and burning all the way. Interviewing a comedian takes a very specific sort of skill set—one I’ve yet to fully master, after all these years. Thorn, on the other hand, continues to do it pretty much every week.

The Sound of Young America has continued to live on, outgrowing its college radio roots, and is now syndicated on 25 terrestrial radio stations (via PRI) and XM. Thorn himself is something of a relic of a largely bygone era—a handful of radio show hosts that recall a time when the radio was a vibrant media. As of late, his presence hasn’t gone unnoticed—Thorn has been the subject of write-ups in both Time Magazine and The New York Times.

When Thorn put out a call for “free advertising,” we gladly obliged. Anyone who tunes in regularly to TSOYA know that, on top of his penchant for all things funny, Thorn is also quite the comics fan. Check out what he had to say on the subject, after the jump.

Who are you?

I’m Jesse Thorn. I usually describe myself as host of the syndicated public radio show The Sound of Young America, but this past weekend at MaxFunCon, my friend Merlin convinced me that I wasn’t a public radio host, but rather a new media entrepreneur. So I guess I’m actually the proprietor of MaximumFun.org, your home on Internet for things that are awesome. I blog, host The Sound, do a comedy show called Jordan, Jesse, Go!, and things like that.
You should totally be my Myspace friend because:

I will stimulate you. (Intellectually).

What are you reading [comic-wise, naturally]?

I regularly re-read Ira Glass and Jessica Abel’s Radio: An Illustrated Guide. It’s what made me think I could actually manage to make my own radio show, and it still inspires me all the time. I buy it by the dozen and give it away when people ask me for advice on starting out in audio production. So simple, so great.

Your favorite comic shop?

I grew up in the Mission in San Francisco, and my local comic shop was called Al’s Comics. It was a block from my house, on Guerrero Street, and right across from the Boys Club, where I went to play bumper pool and make ceramic bowls. Al, the proprietor, was a classic comic book store owner, though not fat and extra surly. He was always good to us kids, but never seemed to be in a good mood.

I read a lot of comics, but Al also saved out Mark Grace cards for me from the baseball cards he (somewhat resentfully) stocked. He also employed my babysitter, Darius. I think Darius literally worked for comics. A couple years ago, 826 Valencia, the literacy charity headed by Dave Eggers, helped Al move to a new location on Market Street when gentrification pushed him out of his old storefront. I donated some money to the effort, even though I didn’t have much then.

This time next year, I hope to be penning the major motion picture adaptation of which comic:

I’ve been kicking around the idea of a comic based on Jordan, Jesse, Go! with my friend Ian Brill, who works in the comics industry. We just did a video game of the show, and that worked out so well, it has me pumped to kickstart the comic. So, first I write that, then the major motion picture.

Assorted Jesse Thorn related comic fun facts:

My favorite Spider-man guy was Erik Larson, even though it was cooler to like Todd MacFarlane.

My favorite comics-related guest on my show was Ariel Schrag, who was a really cool lady. I loved the comics she wrote in high school. I also really liked Adrian Tomine. Class act.

My friends Alex and Stefan, who are in the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, recommended the comic series Concrete to me. I like it a lot. It’s not exactly elegantly written, but there’s something really comforting about the art style and the slight over-wordiness. It feels really lived-in in a great way.

In which members of the entertainment community tearfully reveal their geeky comic obsessions, beneath their hardened irony-based exoskeleton.

A great man in our industry once famously proclaimed, “I’m the best there is at what I do, even though what I do isn’t very nice.” In a certain sense, those words can be applied to Tom Scharpling’s career. His public radio show, which boasts the understated title, ‘The Best Show on WFMU,’ is not a mere case of posturing or hyperbole—rather, it’s something of an honest, level-headed assessment of the facts. Even if it isn’t always all that nice.

The Best Show airs every Tuesday at 8PM EST on Jersey City’s WFMU (simulcast on the Web and later converted into handy podcast form for consumption at your own leisure). Over the course of three hours, Scharpling spins records and takes phone calls on an assortment of guests, both real and fake (the latter of which is nearly always performed by ex-Superchunk drummer, Jon Wurster).

I first discovered Scharpling’s show whilst browsing minis at Quimby’s in Chicago. The cashier was playing that week’s podcast over the loudspeaker, Scharpling well into a rant, discussing the merits of the forthcoming Brian Wilson concept record, Pleasure Island. The setting was rather fitting, as turns out. Scharpling, god help him, is big fan of sequential art, regularly reminding his listeners that he could be doing something better with his time, generally involving a large stack of comics.

We put Scharpling through the Daily Rock Hatch paces earlier this week. Check out his responses, after the jump.

Who are you?

My name is Tom Scharpling. I am the host of The Best Show On WFMU, a radio show on WFMU. You can hear the station at 91.1 FM in the NYC area, or anywhere on the planet at www.wfmu.org. My show is on Tuesday nights from 8-11 PM EST. By day I am a writer and executive producer for the TV show, Monk.

You should totally be my Myspace friend because:

Because it is literally the least you can do. But I’m more juiced about Twitter right now anyway–I’m posting my legendary SCHARPLING’S TWITTER TITTERS daily, and I am going to be writing a novel on Twitter, three words at a time.

What are you reading [comic-wise, naturally]?

I just read three issues of Kick-Ass, which I am not sure what I think of. It might be really terrible. Is it? I have been enjoying Jeff Smith’s RASL, I liked Jenny Finn by Mike Mignola, the Brubaker Captain America, and I am re-re-re-reading Rob Schrab’s SCUD in its exciting complete collection The Whole Shebang. SCUD is my favorite comic book of all time and Rob Schrab is our Jim Henson!

Your favorite comic shop?

I like Jim Hanley’s on Staten Island and JC Comics in North Plainfield NJ.

This time next year, I hope to be penning the major motion picture adaptation of which comic:

I would give my left ear to do whatever it took to make SCUD into a movie. And I think that Allred’s X-Force would translate more to the silver screen than Watchmen will. Or how about a DR. Strange movie?

Assorted Tom Scharpling-related comic fun facts:

The most fun fact is that my goal is to write comics. It is something that I want more than anything. Every time I have tried to get something going or make some connections, I have been treated like a common street urchin. Do you people not know who I am?! Seriously. Someone hook me up here! I’ve got idears!

In which members of the rock community tearfully reveal their geeky comic obsessions, beneath their hardened irony-based exoskeleton.

“Modern art,” Eddie Argos proclaims unapologetically in the song of the same name, “makes me want to rock out.” The lead-singer (well, the lead talk-singer) of Art Brut naturally goes on to rattle off a number of side effects of said artistic period on his temperament, culminating with the head butting of a Matisse in Paris’s Pompidou.

The song is standard Art Brut—raucous, hilarious, and catchy as all get out. And naturally, anyone who has picked up the band’s self-titled debut on which the track appears, has little question about the frontman’s opinions on the world of fine art.

Most of us, however, didn’t catch wind about Argos’s sequential art obsessions until recently, when it was announced that the singer would be penning a column of comic criticism for St. Louis-based entertainment publication, PLAYBACK:stl. Argos, a self-proclaimed DC Comics junkie devoted the first installment of his
“Pow! To the People” column to superhero, Booster Gold. He’s subsequently tackled the world of Angel and Captain America.

After a too-long hiatus, we’re extremely excited to welcome The Daily Rock Hatch with a very special geeking out by Eddie Argos.

Who are you?

I am Eddie Argos. The “Singer” in Art Brut, and recently I’m also the “singer” in Everybody Was In The French Resistance..Now.

You should totally be my Myspace friend because:

You don’t want me as a Myspace friend. I never reply to messages and I’m always forgetting my password.

What are you reading [comic-wise, naturally]?

At the moment I’m enjoying Booster Gold. Jeff Katz and Geoff Johns have just finished there amazing run on it and I’m excited to see where it goes next. I’m about to start reading The Escapists by Brian K Vaughn. I really enjoyed the book by Michael Chabon and I love Brian K Vaughn’s writing so I’m really looking forward to it. I also read Fables/Jack Of Fables and the Angel comic regularly. I was a bit embarrassed about reading Angel as its based on a TV show and that somehow felt wrong but its pretty good and I’m still enjoying it although the issues do feel pretty short.

The comic shop that always makes me late for sound check:

I am genuinely often very late for sound checks because of Comic shops. The Comic shop that’s made me the latest, or in fact miss the sound check altogether, was in, I think, Winnipeg. It was a huge second-hand comic shop, full of very cheap comics that I’d been looking for for years. I stocked up on so many comics I had to buy an extra bag just to get them all home.

This time next year, I hope to be working on the soundtrack to major motion picture adaptation of which comic:

All three Essex County books by Jeff Lemire. They are a trilogy of books about the same small Canadian town. It’s a real place, but they’re fictional stories. Really, totally amazing. I can’t recommend these books enough. There on an independent called Top Shelf. I might write the songs anyway and release some sort of concept album so when it does inevitably turn into a film, I have a head start on everybody else

Assorted Eddie Argos-related comic fun facts:

Umm…I’m trying to write a book at the moment about DC comics. I don’t know if thats a “fun” fact though. There is also a song about DC comics on the next Art Brut album.
