  • From May 1 – 16, 2009, the School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Selected Works From MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Thesis Projects,” an exhibition that brings together books, figurative paintings, graphic novels and narrative series by 20 students graduating from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department at SVA, curated by faculty member David Sandlin.
  • Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn, NY, is celebrating Free Comics Day on May 2 with a soiree and exhibit from ACT-I-VATE, where it’s free comics day every day.
  • The 4th Annual Counter Culture Festival, brought to you by the DC Conspiracy, will be held May 24th at The Soundry in Vienna VA, hosting a plethora of comics, zines, arts and crafts, entertainment and more – for FREE.
  • The Stumptown Comics Fest’s 2009 Trophy Awards have been granted, led by Templar, Arizona, creator Spike with wins in three categories.
  • Alan Gardner announces a second Pulitzer Prize win for Grand Avenue creator and San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen.
  • The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo will take place at Stampede Park on Roundup Way in Calgary, Alberta from April 25-26. Guests include Sergio Aragonés, Darwyn Cooke, Hope Larson, Mike Allred, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Svetlana Chmakova, Terry Moore, and many others.
  • Viking writer Ivan Brandon will be signing books and meeting readers at Laughing Ogre Comics on April 25 in Landsdowne, VA.
  • Gabrielle Bell and Ariel Schrag will be the guests of honor at  a double book-launch party at Family on Fairfax Avenue on April 26 in Los Angeles, CA.
  • Prolific artist David Lloyd discusses the coloring of V for Vendetta on his blog, and previews the radiant new Absolute V for Vendetta, due out in August.
  • The Bolzano Short Film Festival of Italy is expanding to pen and paper with Bolzano Comics, an international comic contest dedicated to “short, wordless comics that narrate without the use of the classic balloon…”
