The Daily Rock Hatch: Jon Spencer
In which members of the rock community tearfully reveal their geeky comic obsessions, beneath their hardened irony-based exoskeleton.
Who are you?
Jon Spencer, Mr. Heavy Trash! The Blues Exploder! Daddy Boss Hog! Microphone Destroyer! Gibson Brother! The guy with Pussy Galore! The man who shared a Chicken Dog with Rufus Thomas, got Soul with R.L. Burnside, and enjoyed a greasy Lap Dance with Andre Williams! The Man Who Loved too Much!!!
You should totally be my Myspace friend because:
Forget it, I got a wife already.
What are you reading [comic-wise, naturally]?
The Pushman & Other Stories by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Silverfish by David Lapham, B.P.R.D., Fear Agent, Batman, Jeff Smith’s Shazam, The Pride by Brian K. Vaughan, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, and anything by Sfar and/or Trondheim.
The comic shop that always makes me late for sound check:
There have been many . . .Here at home in NYC: Cosmic Comics and Forbidden Planet.
This time next year, I hope to be working on the soundtrack to major motion picture adaptation of which comic:
Are they gonna do a movie of Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, 100 Bullets–or how about the Watchmen movie? That’s finally gonna happen, no? (But I gotta admit I don’t have high hopes that the movie will be any good, or that I will be working on the soundtrack.) Maybe the 2nd Hellboy movie will be something? I thought that I was gonna get some work outta 30 Days of Night (see below). Damn!
Assorted Jon Spencer-related comic fun facts:
–My wife (see above) is from Washington DC and knew Steve Niles from the Hardcore (music) scene. When we were courting, me and my wife-to-be, she bought Mr. Nile’s collection of Vampirella as gift for me. Who says the way to man’s heart is through his stomach?
–You want more? The new Heavy Trash album, Going Way Out With Heavy Trash, features art by Tony Millionaire. (The first album, by Paul Pope).
–Brian Heater

I knew there was a reason Jon was my #1 Rock God! I thought there might be some geekly connection with the Chip Kidd Warrenesque packaging for Plastic Fang and the Pope illos for Heavy Trash, but I had no idea he was One Of Us.
