Cross Hatch Dispatch 5/21/2007

It’s not the end of the world. It’s just a comic.
- Lots of eyes are on the Center for Cartoon Studies‘ first 18 graduates, a new breed of “formally-trained” in a field full of “self-taughts.” The Christian Science Monitor, the Times Argus, and even the news station WCAX (it might take some determination to view their videos) have some great coverage of the graduation. Also take a look at the students’ blog for pictures and a recap of their graduation event from this weekend. Alison Bechdel also posted a picture.
- Iran responds with protests to the Persepolis movie which debuts at Cannes this
weekendWednesday, resulting in journalists penning cute phrases like “irate Iranians.” Here’s the wire article making the rounds in the Western press, and read this noticeably ticked off version from the Iranian press. - Mike Reddy, who is currently doing illustrated impressions of various movies or tv shows he’s watched, once did a comic about Jack White of the White Stripes.
- Get your daily serving of molded plastic milk, cheese, and gin. [Ed. in Chief's note: Holy Jesus. I need that!]
- Lalo Alcaraz, who’s La Cucaracha comic strip almost got pulled from right under its own floorboards, the Los Angeles Times, is the subject of this month’s Los Angeles Magazine’s “So you wanna… ” column focusing on the cartoonist.
- You’ve probably read about Filipino cartoonist and comics advocate Gerry Alanguilan in the Comics Reporter, but haven’t had an opportunity to really sample his work. Good thing he launched his daily online comic strip, Crest Hut Butt Shop, this month. Due to his initial hesitation at doing online comics, he only has one other complete online work, Last Meow.
- For all you preview fiends, Meathaus is posted several for their upcoming anthology SOS: Arik Roper, James Jean, Stefan Gruber, D-Pi, Jim Rugg & Brian Maruca, Sheldon Vella, Thomas Herpich, Farel Dalrymple. Asaf and Tomer Hanuka have posted a detailed preview of their contribution on their blog, Tropical Toxic, that shows how the brothers collaborated.
- And continuing with the pretty pictures, Zack Soto has a whole flickr set of pictures from the Floating World of Comics art show.
- David Lasky does prank calls, Salvador Dali style. He also does an uncanny impression of John Porcellino.
- The concept and the lineup for Lulu’s upcoming anthology, Girl’s Guide to Guy’s Stuff, makes it a must buy. The list is long, and I don’t want to pick and choose names, so go see for yourself.
- Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro is interested in doing a film version of Tom Manning’s Runoff comics. So far they’re just talking. I’m not familiar with the comic, but Dan Curtis Johnson writes about it in his livejournal. Late Add: Newsarama reports that the new Pan’s Labyrinth DVD includes some “animated” comics by Guy Davis, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Mike Kaluta.
- Nucleus, a pop art gallery in Alhambra, CA, is doing a charity show for breast cancer research call Power in Numbers. Each piece is between $50 to $100. At least three of the artists are cartoonists: Amy Kim Ganter, Kazu Kibuishi, and Debbie Huey. Some of you might see some more, but I’m not familiar enough with the rest of the names to know comics from pop art, but there’s lots to salivate over.
- Check out Gone With the Blastwave, a funny online comics about a couple of post-apocalyptic Rosencrantz and Gildernstern from a Finnish guy named Kimmo Lemetti. He claims not to be professional, but it’s clear he’s got some skillz. Today’s picture is from Blastwave. (via A Fiends Folio)
