Cross Hatch Dispatch 3/20/2007
The above strip is from the Techno Tuesday comic strip series by Andy Rementer (click through the strip to get the rest of it). If I were the kind to post comic strips up on my office wall, this might be it. Instead, I’ll be linking randomly to various strips throughout this entry. Can you spot them?
- Pizza Kamikaze artist Asaf Hanuka has posted up a side by side comparison of the comic book panels and a scene from the Wristcutter movie adaption (scroll to the end of the post). I’ve already saved the movie to my Netflix queue.
- Short stories get adapted into comic books, and those comic books get adapted into movies. Now poetry has a second life as comic strips. There seems to be a pop culture food chain thing going on here. The Poetry Foundation has posted its second, and latest collaboration between Gabrielle Bell and Emily Dickinson. They have archived their previous David Heatley adaptation of a Diane Wakoski poem.
- If Tom Spurgeon were in San Francisco, he would go to the R. Crumb Underground exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Actually, Alvin Buenaventura (of Buenaventura Press) sent Comics Reporter an account of it, including over 80 photos from his digital camera.
- And finally, a picture of baby August Dagwood Devlin has been posted up on Drawn and Quarterly’s blog, and he looks nothing like a comic strip character. I emailed Tom Devlin about the naming process: “Dagwood has been the leading candidate for names. All four of his grandparents hate the name. We are told Dagwood means “Shining Forest.” Briefly Dagwood was first and Whitaker was second making his full name Shining Forest Whitaker Devlin. I wish I was joking. Ultimately we settled on August Dagwood Devlin. There’s no real significance, we just like those names.”
