Guest Strip: Shayna Marchese

Categories:  Guest Strip

Shayna MarcheseI’m surely a little biased here, but my favorite part of fellow Astoria, NY resident (and, in the interest of full-disclosure, former coworker from the glory days of Laptop Magazine), Shayna Marchese’s webcomic, Voids, has always been her backgrounds, which never fail to remind me of my home sweet home, at the end of the old ‘N’ train.

This standalone strip, “Gowanus,” independent from the Tomine-esque Voids, focuses instead on the eponymous Brooklyn neighborhood, and even more so than with her regular strip, the key here is location, location, location. Also, location. Oh and for the record–and those not living in the greater New York City area, it’s not pronounced ‘Go-Anus.’ Enjoy.

I love the whole ‘no words’ thing. I’ve notcied that when people (who don’t read comics) read my strips they just read the words and don’t really look at the pictures.
Having no words forces you to look at the art.
