Gone Connin’
Nope, Elizabeth won’t be attending Comic Con NYC, but I will—with bells on. Figuratively. I will literally be there with figurative bells on. Be sure to say ‘hi,’ if you see me—I’ll be the guy still in his work clothes, chasing around irate artists, tape recorder in hand. Posting will be a bit slim today, as a result, but rest assured, we’re revving up for week two.
In the meantime, here’s some links to help deal with any potential abandonment issues:
–Johnny Ryan sent us a not to let us know that he has issued a formal statement, in response to Blecky Yuckerella’s cancellation in th Portland Mercury. We find it to be both fair and even-handed. We applaud Ryan for taking the high road. Also, if we’ve never pointed out the shocking similarities between Blecky and Fargo, now might be the time to do it.
–How many culturally insensitive New Yorker cartoons does it take to offend the Polish community? Just one.
–Need another hit in the middle of the three-day bender that is the New York Comic Con? Giant Robot NY will be hosting the Beasts! Book release on Saturday night. Jesse LeDoux, Katy Horan, Keith Shore, R. Kikuo Johnson, and others will be on hand signing–possibly on-hands, if you ask really nicely. And if that’s not enticement enough, I should mention that, the last time that I went to an event at GRNY, the Lower East Side’s finest purveyors of incredibly cool, if somewhat over-priced toys, had a nice M&M and pretzel spread. The sugar high alone should keep you going through Sunday.
–There’s a video and a podcast of a recent speech given by Chris Ware at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, some time ago. Haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but I hear he builds two scale model cities and a fully functioning army of tin cat robots all while the guy is changing the film on the camera.
As for Elizabeth, don’t cry for her. She’s in Southern California, and word from the old rumor mill is that some folks in San Diego might be starting a Con down there. Crazy, I know…
