There really isn't much humor or -- let's be specific -- SATIRE, in what Corben does. That isn't a bad thing! His Sinbad book is one of my favorite graphic novels. But Frank's Foolbert Sturgeon comics (and Griffy's stuff) are all about satire. No wonder if certain kinds of comix inspire sincere admiration, but not complete empathy in the humorists of the alternate comic book generation. And for the record, I dispute the assertion that Richard Corben is more renowned than Frank Stack. After all, I reached this page looking for information about Frank, after watching yet another re-run of American Splendor on IFC. I have never been inspired to look up Richard Corben after watching an anonymized version of him in a movie. Of course I think he's a very fine artist. In a rambling telephone conversation there is no opportunity to go back over the blathering and edit out the incomplete ideas, I think that the only point that I was getting at was that comics such as Corben is a master of doing make no attempt to be funny.
